That's interesting - usually children that have ureteral reflux have had surgery to corrected if there are problems.

All medications have side effects as do any other treatments including surgery. The decision needs to be based on risks and benefits - meaning the benefits obtained from any treatment should outweight the risks of complications or problems from that problem.

The antibiotic he is on is a commonly used one for urinary tract infections. Overtime, however bacterica do develop resistance and may certainly have developed it over 26 years of treatment.

He can always switch to a different antibiotic - however, all antibiotics do have side effects and bacteria do develop resistance. Additionally antibiotics have the effect of killing other bacteria in the body including ones in the intestines which are supposed to be there. Killing the "good bacteria" gives room for "bad bacteria" to grow.

You should consult with your urologist to determine the best course of action.
References :
Hi. my 7 year old had grade 4 reflux on one kidney and grade 5 on the other from the time he was born until he was about 2 years old. they were starting to talk about doing a transplant until his uroligist suggested doing a uriter re- implant. He had the surgery at St. Louis Children's hospital and has never been on any med's or had any infections since then. Hope this Helps, Ellen Lynch
References :
My daughter was born with stage 3 bladder reflux and a dual collection system in her left kidney. and they had her on a low does of amoxicillen to keep bacteria at bay. She is 7 now and currently not on anything. I guess in an adult you would need a higher dose and this would be fruitless. I also had to keep fluids going through her like mad which to this day she drinks water around the clock pretty much. I am so sorry to hear that as anadult they haven't come up with something better
References :
After 8 years of reflux the best choice is surgery. Check for renal scars with a DMSA, if he has renal scars the best choice is surgery(ureteral reimplant)
