My 1 year old cat just got his first bladder infection (blood in the urine, actually there was no urine, just blood) and then my 2 year old dog (Thanksgiving morning) and pooped blood all over her room. Turns out my dog had not enough good bacteria and too much bad bacteria in her digestive tract so now she’s on this powder once a day. She has also already developed incontinence (she looses control of her bladder when calm/sleeping). My thing is, I’ve been reading up on how bad store-bought pet food is for our lil guys and I can’t find any food that is not packed with corn meal and chicken by product!

Does anyone know where I can buy fresh food that is wholesomely good for our pets? I am willing to pay the price…

It depends where you live I guess. I know you can get a lot of really good foods online. However, the absolute best diets for your pets would be home-cooked or raw food diets.

Try checking out these brands (none have any by-products, corn, wheat or soy or artificial colors/flavors/preservatives):
Nature’s Variety (makes canned, dry and raw food diets)
Wellness
Nature’s Logic
Taste of The Wild
By Nature Organics
Primal (raw food)
Or your local grocery store… if you are going to start making your own dog/cat food, I’d invest in a good book so you can be sure to give them a whole balanced diet.

For the incontinence you should check out Leaks No More , it’s made by Homeopet and is a homeopathic remedy for incontinence, a lot of our customers swear by it.

As far as finding other good dog foods check out dogfoodanalysis.com. They know their stuff!

As far as cat’s go, it’s really important that cats get most of their moisture content from their food, especially those that have urinary problems… I would suggest feeding a completely canned food diet if you are debating between dry and canned food.

  1. Go to wholefoods and see what they have. My wholefoods and Wegman’s sells organic pet food for dogs and cats.
You can also make your own food with the same food that humans eat. You just need to cook it and mix it, put some vitamin syrup (petsmart) on it and it is as good as buying it! It is better because you KNOW what is in it and what they are ingesting! Not filler or byproducts.

You can also make sure that your CAT has a lot of fresh water! My cats is prone to urinary tract infections but it is becasue of dry food and lack of water (she doesnt like it). SO I deceided to begin buying them all wet food so that they are getting the water and food together. She has been doing alot better lately! You should try it. Purina even makes a wet food called urinary formula. It works!

Sorry no doggie advise. I only have lots of cats.
    Good Luck!

  2. actually my aunt makes her dog the food she feeds her. She uses brown rice,, I think green beans, stuff like that. You can find recipes online or get a dog cook book. If you do need something more healthy and don’t have time, then I suggest Chicken Soup For the Soul dog and cat food. My dog loves it

I work at a Holistic Pet Store in Oregon. All of the stuff we carry is hand-picked by our vet/owner who knows quite a bit about dog and cat nutrition.

  5. If you are considering a home brew diet, there are recipes out there. But they are very demanding, with little room for error. Sanitation is absolute to avoid bacterial contamination. They also require quite a few trace ingredients, the lack of which might show up six months later with a very sick or dead cat.

As far as corn, it is a very digestible form of protein, although some cats can have a problem, allergy wise, with corn. As far as chicken by-products, it is a matter of definition. Cats have a very short digestive system, and need organ meats that are rich in enzymes. Those are typically not eaten by people, and can fall into the category of chicken by-product. Of course, in cheap foods, those by-products can also be beaks and feathers.

Giving yogurt is often a good way of establishing the good bacteria in an animal’s digestive system.

You can look around at different foods that are claimed to be more ‘natural’. If in the US, and they have the AAFCO seal, it means they contain all the nutrition your cat needs.

However, the finest food in the world is of no value if your cat will not eat it. And a cat will starve themselves to death rather than eat something they don’t like.

In a way, I feel you pretty much get what you pay for. Cheap, and the ingredients are cheap. I stick with quality brand name foods. You can, of course, overpay and pay for the hype.

  6. After the pet food recall in 2007 I was very nervous about buying food for my cats. I wasn’t sure what to feed them or what was safe. I found a line of canned food made by Merrick, which was pretty good, you can check them out at http://www.merrickpetcare.com/. They have some pretty good varieties and they make both canned and dry food. I’ve heard AvoDerm is a good dry food, but it made one of my cats vomit. Currently I am feeding my cats California Naturals dry food and Weruva canned food. The canned food is all human grade food, and honestly some of the meals look like things I would make for dinner! You can check out the canned food at http://www.weruva.com and the dry food at http://www.californianaturalpet.com. The dry food was recommended to my by my local pet store. My cats love both the canned and the dry food, and they hop around when it’s feeding time! I know there is also a natural line of food out that is kept in a refrigerator at the pet store but I do not recall what it is called. Your vet or your local, trusted pet store should also be able to recommend a quality food. You can also search the internet for suggestions. You can also cook for your pets, although most vet’s don’t reccomend this due to a lack of nutrients needed by the animals. Also, I would do a search online and find the list of companies involved in the recall from 2007 and avoid buying their products.
Personally I recommend a grain free diet, if your dog and cat were wild they would be eating meat and fish, and maybe a few leaves and grass, but I don’t believe they would be eating wheat and grains.

  7. First of all, since your cat has bladder issues, I’d reccomend canned food. Second, you should buy your cat’s food at a specialty pet store. I highly reccomend innova cat food.
